In one of my rare spontaneous moments, I decided we HAD to go hiking this morning. The teenager assumed this didn't apply to her and made herself all cute. But it did.
It looked SO different from the last time we were here!
It was a popular trail today, we let several horses and some mountain bikers pass us.
This trail will forever more be known as 'Horsepoop Trail'. The redhead was NOT amused.
Giant flowering thistles were everywhere, attracting bees...
And bigger things.
My goal for outings like this is to be out longer than we are in the car. This time it was barely longer. I actually would have pushed them farther, but unfortunately I was the one who started getting painful blisters* and we headed down.
Monkey would live in the woods if he could. He LOVES being outside and hiking around and exploring. I laughed when at his cub scout day camp he was just bounding up the trail on their little hike. Such a little mountain goat!
There was some grumbling from the other two. Still glad we went. I want to do this more, but I realized a couple things today. 1. My kids aren't spontaneous. I mean, I knew that, but I think the girl would have been happier (she really enjoys hiking usually!) had I let her know we were going the day before. 2. Hikes TO somewhere really are better for kids. Unfortunately those hikes are all farther away... 3. Bring treats. Redhead would have been happier had I thrown a couple lollipops in my bag or something. He actually does great when NOT having to worry about horse poop. Maybe a sketchbook or hiking bingo page would be of interest to him, too.
They'd better get over themselves, we have some camping/national park trips coming up!
*I was unable to find one of my keens because SOMEONE borrowed them, so I wore my sneakers, which apparently I haven't worn for a long time. The rest of the weekend it will be my birks cuz yikes, blisters!
